Grade Four Summer Math Suggestions
Are you looking for rainy day activities? Use your math! Similar to reading, math skills need to be used and practiced throughout the summer to avoid the loss of skills by students. During the first month of school each fall, teachers review concepts learned the prior year with their new class. The length of summer, approximately 10 weeks, is a long time for students not to use the skills they spent 10 months learning. We suggest students use the following web sites and concepts at least once a week to help them retain learned math concepts.
Internet Activities: Use the following web sites for games and activities.
Play games and drill facts while having fun!

Concepts to Review:
Measurement:
Help bake or cook in the kitchen.
Measure the length of your yard, driveway, or bedroom.
Measure the height of your friends or family members.
Use a floor scale to weigh various items around your house.
Take 100 pennies. Stack them in a pile and measure the height in centimeters.
Measure the height of your door.
Geometry:
Draw a three sided figure. What is it called?
Draw and label the 3 types of 3 sided figures.
Draw a four sided figure. What is it called? Draw and label the different types.
Draw a five sided figure. What is it called?
Draw a six sided figure. What is it called?
Draw an eight sided figure. What is it called?
Find these figures around your house or outside.
List all the solids you can. Categorize objects you find inside or outside your house.
Find the perimeter, area, and volume of boxes around your house.
Find the perimeter and area of your yard.
Make Change:
Keep track of your allowance.
Make change at the store.
Find how many ways you can have $1.00 in coins. Now try with $5.00.
Elapsed time (to the nearest minute):
Find how much time passed between two times.
Find how much time it takes to get to a particular place (beach, friend's house, store).
Basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division):
Make flash cards to practice all basic facts daily.
Change metric units (1,000 grams = 1 kg; 1,000 mL = 1 L; 1,000 meter = 1 km)
Word Problems:
Write word problems for friends or family members to solve.
Use all 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) in the problems.
Write 2-step problems (2 different operations in one problem).
Fractions:
Decide what fraction of the cake or pizza each person eats.
Keep track of the weather on a calendar. What fraction of the days were sunny? Rainy?
Change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.
Probability:
Find the probability of pulling a #2 from a deck of cards. A royalty card?
Find the probability of sunny versus rainy days in the past month.
Math is everywhere! Play card games, Monopoly, or Scrabble.
Just look for the math in everyday life!
