Dedie King and Judith Inglese

Author/illustrator team Dedie King and Judith Inglese visited with kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students at Conant on Wednesday, November 20, 2013.  Dedie and Judith have published a series of picture books, each focusing on a typical day in the life of a child in one country in the world.   So far they have written about Mexico, China, Russia, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Myanmar/Burma, with India soon to be published.  The children had listened to many of the books during their library time.  During the presentation, students learned both about writing and illustrating books and about what life is like in some other parts of the world.  The program was enthusiastically received!  These are some of the comments from our second graders:

“It’s cool how they did all these books about countries around the theme of I See the Sun in . . .

“I like how Dedie King included a glossary for words we might not know.”

“It was neat how they put an object for us to find on every page.”

I liked how Mrs. Inglese built her illustrations on top of a photograph.”

“It was interesting to see how the different languages looked and it also meant that a child in Nepal, for example, could read the book as well as we could!”
